Sandhani, a dazzling name engraved in the holly hearts of
medical & dental students of Bangladesh is as active and
dedicated voluntary organization which born in 1977. It is the
pioneer of blood and cornea donation for saving human was and
for the improvement of quality of life. Indeed, it is a bright
example of humanity-oriented endeavour set up; by the medical &
dental students of Bangladesh.
The birth history of Sandhani deserves glory. It was the morning
of the 5th of February 1977 when 6 students reading in the 2nd
year of M.B.B.S course in Dhaka Medical College gathered beneath
the big tree in the vicinity of the Anex Buliding of Dhaka
university with view to co-operate one to their classmates in
relieving him from monetary trouble not allowing him to take
breakfast in the morning. Those six kind-hearted young people
decided to help their economically distressed classmate with tk.
32 monthly with one paying Tk. 7 and each of the rest paying Tk.
5 per month. Consequently he could have a reasonable breakfast
every morning Afterwards, the six friends attempted to make
their endeavour flower into an organizational entity, which was
named ‘Sandhani’.
The time when “Sandhani” was born was full of mismanagement
regarding blood donation collection and inhumane and dangerous
blood business was prevailing in the country. Under those
circumstances ‘Sandhani’ lit the torch of volunatry blood
donation which officially began on the 2nd of November, 1978.
The journey of Sandhani in quest of corneas to set people free
from the curse of blindness began towards the end of the same
year. Sandhani moved in the path of humanity with big strides
and established its units in all medical and dental colleges by
1983. In 1984, it gave birth to “Sandhani National Eye Society”.
Moreover, sandhani has come to the aid of flood affected people
during periods of flood, born the expenses of the education of
thousands of poor and brilliant students and arranged many
seminars and workshops with a view to kindle the light of
humanity in the heart of people. Sandhani is therefore a
magnificent organization which moulds the minds of the medical
students into those which are dedicated to serve the humanity at
any moment with knowledge spirit, love and patience.
